A new year, a familiar street

Real change rarely comes from grand declarations. It comes from noticing a pattern and choosing differently, which is slower and far less dramatic than January usually promises.

As the calendar turns, many of us feel the familiar pull to do better, try harder, or finally become a different version of ourselves.

But real change rarely comes from grand declarations. More often it comes from noticing patterns and choosing differently, which is the slower work that coaching is actually for.

Why does change feel so hard every January?

Because most of us are earlier in the process than we think. Recognising a pattern, seeing it clearly, and still repeating it is not failure. It is a genuine stage, and it comes before the stage where you can avoid it. Skipping straight to a new self is not how it works.

There is a short poem I return to often this time of year, Portia Nelson’s Autobiography in Five Chapters. It is worth looking up in full.

It moves through five stages of the same walk down the same street: falling into a hole and blaming circumstance, falling in again while pretending not to see it, seeing it clearly and falling in anyway out of habit, then walking around it, and at last choosing a different street altogether.

What actually moves someone forward?

Not willpower. What I see again and again is that progress comes from support, awareness, and systems that actually fit the life you have rather than the life you wish you had. The people who change are rarely the ones who tried hardest. They are the ones who had help.

So many of us arrive in January feeling stuck in the earliest chapters, blaming ourselves or blaming circumstances, wondering why it feels so hard.

Our work is not about perfection or pressure. It is about helping you move, gently but steadily, toward walking around the hole, and eventually toward a different street entirely.

Here is to a year of awareness, compassion, and different choices.
