GLP‑1 medications / Semaglutide

Semaglutide (Wegovy®), prescribed and managed by your own physician.

A once-weekly injection that quiets appetite and food noise. Your physician decides whether it fits after reviewing your history and labs, and it always comes with a health coach and one-on-one visits.

STEP 1 trial result

14.9%

average body weight lost over 68 weeks on semaglutide 2.4 mg

Adults with obesity or overweight, without diabetes (Wilding et al., NEJM 2021). Averages, not a promise; everyone in the trial also made lifestyle changes.

What semaglutide is

Semaglutide acts like GLP-1, a gut hormone that signals fullness and slows how quickly the stomach empties. Most people notice they get full sooner and think about food less.

Wegovy®Dosed and FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults and children 12 and older, and to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight.
Ozempic®The same active ingredient, approved for type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes, your physician will talk through which fits.
Who it may fitBMI 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or high cholesterol.
Who it may notPersonal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, pregnancy, or past pancreatitis. Your physician screens for these.

How dosing works

Wegovy starts low and steps up every four weeks, which is how most people avoid the worst of the nausea. Your physician may hold a step or go slower.

  1. 0.25 mgWeeks 1–4
  2. 0.5 mgWeeks 5–8
  3. 1 mgWeeks 9–12
  4. 1.7 mgWeeks 13–16
  5. 2.4 mgWeek 17 on

Once-weekly injection under the skin of the belly, thigh or upper arm, on the same day each week. 2.4 mg is the usual maintenance dose; some people stay on 1.7 mg. Schedule from the Wegovy Prescribing Information.

Side effects and safety

The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache and tiredness. They are usually worst in the first weeks after each dose increase.

Less common but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems from dehydration, low blood sugar with some diabetes medicines, and serious allergic reactions. Call us, or 911 in an emergency, if you have severe stomach pain that won't go away.

Important safety information

Wegovy® carries a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. Do not use it if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Not for use during pregnancy. Your physician reviews your history before prescribing.

Common questions

How is semaglutide given?

As a once-weekly injection under the skin with a prefilled pen, on the same day each week. We show you how at your first visit.

How effective is it?

In the STEP 1 trial, adults with obesity or overweight and without diabetes who took semaglutide 2.4 mg with a reduced-calorie diet and more activity lost an average of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Individual results vary.

What happens if I stop?

In the STEP 1 extension, people who stopped semaglutide regained, on average, about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year. That is why coaching starts on day one and why we plan for what comes after with you.

Do I have to follow a diet?

No strict diet and no calorie counting. Your coach helps you eat enough protein, stay hydrated and choose smaller portions that fit your real week.

Can I take it with other weight-loss medicines?

Not with another GLP-1 medicine such as tirzepatide. Tell your physician about everything you take, including supplements, so we can check for interactions.

Does insurance cover it?

Mindful Wellness is cash-pay and does not bill insurance for its programs. Program fees are FSA/HSA eligible, and we walk you through every cost up front, including medication.
